FROM THE EDITOR

This week, Embedded Technology Journal is thrilled to welcome Dick Selwood, European Editor, in his debut appearance. Dick will be reporting regularly on the embedded happenings in Europe. For the 1/3 or so of you reading from there, your wishes have been granted. For the 1/2 of you reading from west of the pond, we'll closed-caption the queen's grammar so you can follow along. For the remaining 1/6 of you in the Asia/Pacific region, our global coverage is expanding.

In the first of his dispatches, Dick sets the scene in Britain at the Embedded System Show (ESS).

Also this week, Embedded Technology Journal is excited to be joining Journal Forums (www.journalforums.com). Journal Forums gives you a chance to sound off in public with your opinions on our articles as well as on embedded design topics in general. After you post your feedback and questions on Dick Selwood's "Embedded Britain?" - stop by and make your opinion known on our first weekly reader poll - "How do you feel about trade shows?"

Thanks for reading! If there's anything we can do to make our publications more useful to you, please let us know at: comments@embeddedtechjournal.com. If you'd rather sound off in public, please post your comments or questions in our new Journal Forums.

Embedded Britain?
by Dick Selwood

As we all know, Britain is a land of warm beer and poor food. Well, both of those have changed (and the beer was never warm – just served at a room temperature to bring out the full complexity of flavour rather than, as in some other countries, chilled hard to hide the lack of taste). Today Britain is a mix of heritage museum, dynamic economy and, in places, a heaven for food lovers.

So, what are embedded engineers up to in all of this? At the recent ESS (Embedded System Show), Britain's leading exhibition and conference, I talked to a number of the exhibitors to try and get a qualitative overview for what is happening today.

While ESS is a small brother of the ESCs of the US and the even bigger embedded world in February in Germany, it still attracts around 2500 attendees, mainly from within Britain. It provides a good barometer for the general feeling in the industry and for the second year running the barometer was reading "set fair", with the feeling among exhibitors that visitors were working on real projects and coming to the show to find solutions to real problems, not just tire kicking.
