FROM THE EDITOR

This week, we take a look at Wind River’s recent announcement of their new Management Suite for remotely diagnosing and debugging embedded software on remote devices – even after they’re deployed at a customer’s site.  Wind River figures that more design teams will take advantage of the remote management capabilities afforded by ubiquitous connectivity if they don’t have to invent the technology from scratch.  We’re inclined to agree.

Wind River Management Suite

With desktop application software, we’ve practically come to expect it. Periodically, a dialog box will pop up telling us that some software update is available, presumably fixing one problem or another with our current installation, and we click OK to allow our system to upgrade itself remotely to the latest patch level. Sometimes, if we’ re the lucky customer that encounters a problem first, the software vendor may be able to use remote management facilities to operate our machine, allowing them to more quickly isolate and solve our problem - creating a patch that they can then share with the breadth of their customer base. In ideal circumstances, they’d be able to run a source-level debugger directly on our malfunctioning machine or directly download core dumps from tragic system events of the recent past in order to expedite that process.
