FROM THE EDITOR

This week, we take a look at the shifting sands of softness. Gone are the days when "hardware" was permanent and "software" was changeable. In this brave new technology world, the principle of softness permeates every corner of our system design. Our latest feature takes a look at this new softness and how it affects our design decisions and even our careers.

Thanks for reading! If there's anything we can do to make our publications more useful to you, please let us know at: comments@embeddedtechjournal.com

How Soft?
Embedded Evolution Challenges Definitions

Engineers like to categorize things. Having a good definition or label to apply to a concept facilitates communication and understanding. If I use the acronym "ASIC" in a technical article, an electronic design audience knows that I'm talking about an Application Specific Integrated Circuit. If they're savvy, they even think about the fact that ASICs are used to get the absolute best performance/unit-cost ratio for high-volume, highly demanding applications. Some people, however, may think I'm also implying a particular implementation technology or design methodology – like gate array or cell-based design.

If I use the term "software," a variety of images might appear in the engineering audience's mind. A software engineer might think of source code in his or her favorite programming language. A hardware engineer might think of a series of instructions to be executed on a Von Neumann architecture. A system designer might visualize a set of capabilities that are easy to modify in the field.
