Movial and Industry Innovators Showcase Mobile Internet Device Prototype at Mobile World Congress

Partners Apastron and Provoke Join Forces with Movial to Develop Touch-Screen Device That Redefines the Mobile Internet Experience;

Prototype Powered by TI’s Multimedia-Enhanced OMAP2420 Applications Processor
Mobile World Congress 2008

BARCELONA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Movial, the company that inspires rich, intuitive Internet experiences, today announced that together with Apastron embedded system design specialists and Provoke strategic industrial designers, it has developed a Mobile Internet Device (MID) that redefines the mobile Internet as it exists today. The joint solution, which is being showcased at Mobile World Congress, delivers a superior mobile Internet user experience and proves that device manufacturers and operators have a cost-effective, viable open-source alternative to proprietary platforms. Based on Texas Instruments’ multimedia-enhanced, low-power OMAP2420 applications processor, the prototype MID harnesses the power of the Internet to produce compelling content and enables participation in communities such as MySpace and Facebook.

Using the Movial IXS (Internet Experience Suite) application suite and Movial’s newly unveiled browser-based UI (User Interface) technology, this partnership was able to easily and quickly deliver a custom-branded user interface using open source software in one month. The prototype, with its wide screen display and capacitive touch screen was developed on top of the ARM mobile Linux platform and leverages Texas Instruments’ high-performance OMAP2420 processor to provide compelling content that truly enhances the user experience.

“Movial’s strategy is to enable our customers to easily and quickly deliver rich user experiences to their customers in turn,” said Tomi Rauste, president of Movial Creative Technologies. “By combining Movial’s IXS and UI technology with Provoke’s award-winning industrial design and Apastron’s optimized electronics design, we have created a prototype that offers a superior mobile Internet user experience in record time.”

The prototype MID can be seen at GSMA Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest wireless communications conference and exhibition, in Barcelona, Spain, February 11-14, 2008 (TI booth #8A84).

“Movial, Apastron and Provoke have delivered an extremely capable open-source Internet solution for mobile devices packaged in an exciting form factor,” said Markus Tremmel, wireless ecosystem manager at TI. “This MID prototype is a great example of what TI’s talented OMAP Developer Network members can create by unleashing the power of TI’s high-performance, power-efficient, OMAP family of chips.”

Movial is a member of TI’s OMAP Developer Network, a group of leading software developers porting advanced applications to TI’s high-performance, power-efficient OMAP processors. Handset manufacturers adopting OMAP devices enjoy the rapid deployment of compelling wireless applications – including streaming audio and video, multimedia messaging, gaming, security, speech recognition, location based services and mobile commerce – across all leading operating systems. Systems-level integration services are also provided worldwide by independent OMAP Technology Centers. The OMAP platform has been selected by leading manufacturers, such as Nokia, Palm, NEC, Fujitsu, LG Electronics, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, HTC and many more, for their 2.5 and 3G wireless devices.
