TEKmicro and PrismTech to Provide up to 100x Performance Boost for FPGA-Based Signal Processing ApplicationsIP Core Solution Extends SCA-Compliant Operating Environments to the FPGA ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--PrismTech™ and TEK Microsystems, Inc., today jointly announced the availability of PrismTech’s OpenFusion Integrated Circuit ORB (ICO) middleware for TEK Microsystems’ VXS-based Quixilica™ family of digitizer boards and data recording systems. The design, integration, and reuse of FPGA hardware applications is now significantly faster and less expensive for developers of distributed, high-performance computing systems, such as those used in software defined radio, radar, electronic warfare and telecommunications. PrismTech also now delivers ICO compliant with the Software Communication Architecture (SCA) for software defined radios (SDR) using TEK Microsystems’ Quixilica boards and systems. ICO for SDR is part of PrismTech’s Spectra 2 SDR Operating Environment (OE) product family and is the only IP-core solution that extends the SCA-compliant operating environments all the way to the FPGA level. “The PrismTech ICO provides a standards-based ‘IP core’ allowing engineers working with TEK Microsystems’ FPGA development platforms to benefit from shorter design times, easier integration, increased design reuse, and increased portability of applications,” said Paul Martino, vice president of sales, marketing and customer service at TEK Microsystems, Inc. “This provides us with a unique development advantage over other VXS products currently on the market and it provides our customers with a huge time-to-market advantage.” The adoption of FPGAs for signal processing traditionally has been limited by the complexity of FPGA application designs and their incompatibility with conventional software designs. “PrismTech’s ICO technology allows conventional software development techniques to now be used to quickly develop and integrate signal processing applications in FPGA hardware across the entire TEK Microsystems’ Quixilica product line,” said Andrew Foster, PrismTech OpenFusion product manager. “The great appeal of FPGAs is their ability to handle in hardware a number of complex functions which previously would have been executed in software. Since hardware can perform many operations in parallel this means that using FPGA’s can significantly raise performance compared to software running on general purpose processors.” In tests performed by PrismTech, message processing power executed directly in FPGA hardware was more than 100 times faster than when executed in software. Demonstrations of the integrated PrismTech and TEK Microsystems’ SDR development platform will be available at the 2007 Software Defined Radio Technical Conference and Product Exposition, November 5-9, in Denver, Colorado. PrismTech ICO/TEK Microsystems Quixilica development kits start at $60K. High resolution photos available upon request.
