Renesas’ New Low-Pin Count R8C/Tiny Series MCUs Offer Specialized On-Chip Features for Electronic Ballast, Handheld Power Tools and Motor Control Applications
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Renesas Technology America, Inc. today announced 30 new products in seven groups, a major expansion of the R8C/Tiny series of compact, high-performance 16-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) with on-chip flash memory. Designed for applications such as electronic ballast, handheld power tools, and motor control, the devices in the R8C/2E, 2F, 2G, 2H, 2J, 2K and 2L groups raise the total number of products in the R8C/Tiny series to 268 in 33 groups.
“The new devices in the R8C/Tiny series are designed with specialized on-board peripherals to meet the requirements of particular market segments or applications,” said Ritesh Tyagi, director, system LSI business unit, Renesas Technology America, Inc. “For example, motor control and electronic ballast require very different on-chip resources. These devices provide customized solutions with appropriate feature sets so engineers can efficiently design their systems without paying extra cost for external components. To provide design flexibility and aid product development, Renesas offers factory programming services with one-time nominal charges. This means that customers ordering R8C/Tiny MCUs do not need to pay additional per device fees for factory programming.”
The seven new groups of MCUs have the following main features.
* R8C/2K and /2L groups have a 32-pin package and provide timer functions that are ideal for motor control — Their on-chip 3-channel 16-bit timer modules have advanced waveform generation capabilities as well as standard input-capture/output-compare functions. A single MCU can handle both 3-phase PWM (pulse width modulation) output and 3-phase pulse input for control of brushless DC motors. The timers can operate at 40MHz from a high-precision on-chip oscillator, allowing fast, precise motor control operation.
* R8C/2E and /2F groups are the first 32-pin R8C devices with D/A converter and comparator functions — Their rich set of analog peripheral functions — 8-bit 2-channel D/A converter, 2-channel comparator, and 10-bit 12-channel A/D converter — is tightly coupled and can be configured at runtime for different tasks, making them ideal for applications such as electronic ballast control that require quick and accurate analog processing.
* R8C/2G, /2H, and /2J groups have simpler functionality to reduce cost for applications that don't require certain built-in peripherals — These 20- and 32-pin devices are designed for cost sensitive applications where MCU-based electronics replace electromechanical/discrete designs. These MCUs provide key value-added on-chip features to reduce overall system cost. They include an 8MHz high-accuracy on-chip oscillator, power-on reset (POR), comparators, and low-voltage detect (LVD).
All of these devices come with a hardware LIN function that allows connecting multiple devices efficiently at low cost.
To aid system development, Renesas offers a complete suite of development tools designed specially for R8C/Tiny MCUs. Designers can evaluate the MCUs using existing starter kits which include an on-chip debug emulator, target board and software tools. The on-chip debug emulator uses a 1-wire interface, leaving all I/O pins available for more efficient program development. For advanced debugging features, low-cost full-function emulators are also available for the 2K and 2L groups. In addition, the Renesas High-performance Embedded Workshop with C/C++ compiler and assembler tools is available free of charge to all users requiring 64KB or less memory.
