MontaVista Software Offers Preview of 5.0 Products

MontaVista offers customers the chance to preview new features from upcoming 5.0 products

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MontaVista Software, Inc., the leading embedded Linux provider for the telecommunications, mobile, and embedded markets, today announced a technology preview of its 5.0 products which are scheduled for release in the first half of 2007. The interactive preview will be available to all of MontaVista’s current subscription customers.

The technology preview will not only allow customers to experience the new features available in the 5.0 product lineup, but will also provide them with a quality platform for testing current applications in the upcoming 5.0 product environment. The platform will give customers the chance to identify and validate the changes needed to successfully migrate to upcoming MontaVista’s 5.0 products. Additionally, customers will be exposed to the technology trends that MontaVista is implementing and as a result can begin application development on the current common code base offered by MontaVista.

“Customers depend on MontaVista to differentiate their products and get them to market faster at lower overall development costs,” said Oren Teich, director of product management, MontaVista Software. “This technology preview gives them the opportunity to prepare and experience first-hand the innovative features of MontaVista’s forthcoming 5.0 products so they can successfully operate in today’s competitive Linux environment.”

The technology preview highlights the following new features of MontaVista’s 5.0 product lineup:

2.6.18 kernel integrating real-time – New kernel offering the first embedded OS to provide integration of the latest real-time patches from Ingo Molnar, a leading contributor to Linux kernel development. These patches will provide enhanced user space options in real-time.

GCC 4.2.0 – Updated GCC compiler, version 4.2, which enhances performance through inter-procedural optimizations, autovectorization, and improved debugging capabilities using location lists.
IPv6 – Additional support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) which offers a more comprehensive level of support than in past product versions.

OProfile – The continuous system-wide profiler for Linux functions from the kernel to applications allowing data to be collected at any time.

mpatrol – A tool to diagnose run time memory errors and leaks and also acts as a library for controlling and tracing dynamic memory allocations.

USB “On-The-Go” (OTG) – The USB OTG support addresses the need for mobile interconnectivity by allowing direct communication when a PC is not available.

The technology preview will be provided as a VMWare disk image, usable with VMWare's free VMWare player on any Linux or Windows machine.
