Comsys Presents Cellular Convergence Capabilities of ComMAX™ Multimode Baseband Processor at WiMAX World

ComMAX baseband processor solution uses flexible architecture to support 3GSM cellular and current/future mobile WiMAX profiles, targeting 4G evolution and mobile Internet convergence

11 October 2006: WiMAX World USA, Boston – Comsys Communication and Signal Processing, a leader in wireless baseband solutions, is announcing details at the WiMAX World event about the 4G convergence capabilities of ComMAX™, a flexible multimode OFDM/A baseband processor that enables service continuity between cellular and Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e). Targeted at manufacturers of multimode mobile WiMAX terminals, ComMAX provides a comprehensive broadband solution with MIMO capability that can operate over multiple bands, and which offers substantial cost and power-savings.

The ComMAX SoC has been specifically designed with a flexible architecture to support current and future Mobile WiMAX profiles including second wave certification. With software/hardware partitioning that has been optimized to meet the specific power and die-size requirements of mobile terminals, ComMAX incorporates a software-configurable modem core that addresses Mobile WiMAX, 3GPP LTE as well as future 4G standards requirements.

With the target of driving mobile Internet convergence, ComMAX has been designed to enable service continuity over existing cellular technologies and is optimized for WiMAX operation. Integrating an advanced MAC engine with optimized neighbour-cell management, ComMAX supports full mobility at high vehicular speeds.

ComMAX targets handset OEMs/ODMs, PDA designers and SD Card manufacturers who are planning to add mobile WiMAX functionality to their terminals. The processor and accompanying reference designs will be available in the market during 2007.

Elkana Ben Sinai, Comsys CEO, commented, “Recent announcements by major service providers regarding their convergence plans for Mobile WiMAX and Cellular reaffirm Comsys’ commitment and focus on enabling mobile internet convergence through advanced baseband processors".

Added Ehud Reshef, 4G Product Manager at Comsys, “Comsys’ background in cellular technology is a real strength for us in tapping into the potential of cellular/WiMAX convergence. WiMAX is fundamentally a cellular technology and has more similarities service-wise with 3GSM than with WLAN, especially in the area of power consumption. Our multimode integrated solution offers up to 50% power savings compared to alternative suppliers, and provides a cost-effective path towards seamless 4G services.”

Comsys is exhibiting at Booth 614 at the WiMAX World USA event in Boston, which runs October 10 - 12 at the Boston World Trade Center. Ehud Reshef will present ComMAX and Comsys’ product roadmap as part of his presentation on “Multimode Mobile WiMAX/Cellular solutions” at the technology solution showcase on October 12.
