Borland Enhances VisiBroker(R) Application Middleware with New Capabilities for Service-Oriented Architectures and Multi-Technology Application Stacks

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2006--
Company Also Introduces Upgraded Version of Borland AppServer(TM) with Improved Management and Modularity Features for J2EE(TM) Applications

Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ:BORL), the global leader for Software Delivery Optimization (SDO), today announced a major new release of its VisiBroker(R) enterprise middleware featuring enhanced support for service-oriented architectures (SOAs) and additional capabilities designed to foster greater control over the development and deployment of CORBA-based applications. VisiBroker 7.0 provides a high-performance middleware layer optimized for mission-critical applications, enabling customers to expose CORBA application functions as services within service-oriented architectures.

CORBA, an open standard for communicating between distributed software modules across networks, is widely used in distributed computing systems and powers some of the world's most critical software systems, from global telecommunications networks to national stock exchanges and defense systems.

"As the market leader in the CORBA application deployment market, Borland is committed to providing industrial-strength middleware products that allow customers to protect and extend their current investments," said Jorge Rodriguez, vice president of engineering for Borland's Deployment Products Group. "VisiBroker 7.0 enables customers to deploy existing and new CORBA applications with even greater levels of performance and control, as well as evolve to next-generation architectures requiring multi-technology integration and support for SOA."

"Open-Choice" Middleware for the Most Demanding Distributed Applications

VisiBroker 7.0 provides a complete CORBA environment for developing, deploying, and managing distributed enterprise applications. In addition to CORBA, distributed computing systems today are also incorporating newer technologies to support J2EE(TM) and Microsoft .NET applications, as well as service-oriented architectures (SOAs). VisiBroker 7.0 enables organizations to effectively integrate distributed applications that may be built using various languages, platforms, and standards. Customers can leverage existing as well as new CORBA applications into an SOA without requiring extensive one-off integration, thereby prolonging the lifespan and increasing the value of CORBA investments.

Enterprise data "locked" in older CORBA applications can be leveraged into newer applications built on any of the leading technology stacks including Web Services, Microsoft .NET, or J2EE. Applications native to the .NET platform can participate equally in a set of tightly-coupled cooperating applications along with CORBA applications written in C++ and Java, making VisiBroker 7.0 language-agnostic relative to C++, Java, Microsoft C++, and C#.

In addition to addressing newer technologies, unprecedented levels of complexity and user demand are placing stringent demands on the middleware that runs heterogeneous distributed computing systems. Applications need to be able to scale to meet rising transaction needs and new software without sacrificing performance or reliability. VisiBroker 7.0 is well suited for these environments, with improved transaction performance and greater control over system resources, enabling customers to further optimize performance based on application behavior.

VisiBroker now supports MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition, designed for telecommunications and data communications with requirements for high availability, fault management and real-time performance.

"As the leading Linux platform supplier for the embedded systems market, we are very excited to have the established CORBA middleware market leader now supporting our carrier-grade platform," said Dan Cauchy, director, product management, MontaVista Software. "Embedded data communication systems require high-performance, reliable software infrastructures to meet stringent carrier demands, and VisiBroker provides a great choice for our customers."

In other news, Borland is also introducing an upgraded version of Borland AppServer(TM), a high-performance application server for J2EE platform applications. Borland AppServer offers a high-performance, proven J2EE application server optimized for demanding mission-critical applications. This latest version fully supports J2EE 1.4 standard and is well suited for embedding into packaged software applications and environments that require close integration between CORBA and J2EE applications.

Availability

VisiBroker 7.0 is now shipping for the Windows, HP-UX, and Solaris platforms. It will be made available for AIX and Linux platforms this summer. Borland AppServer will be available for customer shipments in the second quarter of this year.
