Trolltech Raises Bar Again With Qtopia 4 Series; Flexible Platform to Provide 100% User Interface Customization on a Broad Range of Linux Consumer Devices

3GSM World Congress 2006

BARCELONA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 13, 2006--Trolltech(R), the company that makes software faster to build and easier to use, today announced the Qtopia(R) 4 Series, including robust application platforms and user interfaces that will support the use of Linux on a wide variety of consumer devices. Trolltech's Qtopia(R) 4 Series will give developers a flexible and inexpensive way to create Linux-based mobile phones, personal media players and much more.

Consumer electronics manufacturers are increasingly looking to Linux as an operating system on which to standardize development, significantly cut cost and time to market, and retain control over the features and functionality of their devices.

With Qtopia 4 Series, Trolltech will offer solutions for a wider range of devices, from single-application products such as medical scanners to advanced feature phones, personal media players and other consumer electronics. Qtopia's rich toolkit, intuitive API and comprehensive documentation reduce time to market for manufacturers in an increasingly competitive arena. Qtopia 4 Series will also feature an integrated windowing system, a range of input methods, enhanced visual quality including Scalable Vector Graphics as well as internationalization, right to left text capabilities and SQL database support. For operators, Qtopia offers the freedom to customize the user experience and the technology behind it so that devices are distinctive and appeal to a variety of subscribers.

"Any embedded Linux device can benefit from Qtopia 4 Series," said Haavard Nord, CEO of Trolltech. "Currently, more than 90 vendors are designing, building or shipping devices based on Qtopia; of these, 40 are mobile phone designers and manufacturers. Additionally, as devices become more personalized, we expect to see a surge in interest around open-source software because of the speed and flexibility it offers developers of applications for these types of devices."

"With Trolltech's Qtopia we get to market faster and we benefit from being able to make unique user interfaces for all of our clients -- strengthening their brands and our market position," said Jason Sun, CEO, Cellon.

A growing ecosystem of partners and technology suppliers, from leading chipset manufacturers and operating system providers to application developers and media companies have come together to support and integrate Qtopia and embedded Linux.

"Linux is becoming an increasingly important OS in the mobile phone space. Trolltech's Qtopia 4 Series will reduce time to market for smartphone manufacturers and offer increased flexibility of configuration. Such products are necessary to help drive this market to its full potential. Using TI OMAP(TM) processors with Qtopia will help manufacturers realize market potential," said Markus Tremmel, worldwide manager of TI's Cellular Systems Ecosystem.

"We were able to rapidly bring up Trolltech's Qtopia on our Linux platform with our Vision X115 chipset solution," said Mark Bode, director of mobility product marketing at Agere Systems. "With Qtopia and Agere's Vision(TM) X115, we are demonstrating cinema-quality video and CD quality music on a low cost platform for mainstream mobile phones."

"We are pleased to work with Trolltech's Qtopia to provide 'Audistry(TM) by Dolby(R)', a best in class audio technology solution, for Linux-based mobile phones," said Chris Bennett, President, Audistry LLC. "With our suite of customizable audio features and Qtopia's customizable user interface and development platform, customers have a personalized and enjoyable experience when listening to music or movies on the go."

"Opera and Trolltech share a common vision of providing technology that supports a wide variety of mobile devices," said Christen Krogh, VP Engineering, Opera Software. "Trolltech's Qtopia with the integrated Opera Mobile browser gives device manufacturers the flexibility and customization the market requires."

"Certicom is pleased to support Trolltech's Qtopia 4," said Jim Alfred, director of product management for Certicom Corporation. "By integrating our embedded security architecture with Qtopia's customizable user interface and development platform, phone manufacturers now have a trusted and flexible platform, which secures the device from the silicon up to the application."

Qtopia Product Family Grows

In June 2005, Trolltech launched a major new version of Qt(R), its popular cross-platform development software, which provides the foundation for the Qtopia 4 Series.

In January 2006, Trolltech launched Qtopia Core, the application platform for single-application products built on embedded Linux. Qtopia Core features the same API and toolkit as Qt providing a complete infrastructure for end-to-end development.

Qtopia inherits Qt 4's new technologies -- high-quality rendering engine, model/view architecture, template container classes and action-based main window architecture -- and improved features including text rendering and multi-threading. Qtopia 4 Series complements this growing family of products by adding the ability to use Linux easily across a wider range of devices.
